George Buckland - WORD recruitment limited - Medical Writing FestivalGeorge Buckland
Back to Seminar Listings
George Buckland founded WORD Recruitment Ltd in June 2010 after ten years in the recruiting business, much of it focused on placing medical writer talent with various firms. WORD distinguishes itself with its very personalized service to both medical writers and placements

George is a graduate of Thames Valley University, LLB (Hons)

George has been a recruiter since 1999 and his focus has been in working with editorial talent – copywriters, editors, journalists, and of course medical writers. Like many writers his current career and passion was not the first thing he did. He flirted with law (studied it in fact), worked as assistant to a theatrical agent (office dogs body on a pittance of a wage but very glamorous), and a design agency office manager (keeping designers fed and watered mainly)..It’s now his privilege and pleasure to open up possibilities for the talent he represents – a surgeon considering a writing career, a post-doc researcher wanting to escape the lab bench, an experienced writer wanting the freedom of a freelance medical writing career…. Knowing that a career is not always a vertical progression he does not simply tick a check list of a bland generic job specification – he takes time to understand what makes you do what you do and how you do it, what you want to be doing more of and doing less, where you are heading and when you want to get there, what’s holding you back and driving you on, who’s working with you and who you need with you….. and then he can point you in one direction or several directions to achieve what you want to achieve.

Sample Recommendations for George Buckland – How He Works

“George takes the time and trouble to get to know you, and really listen to your preferences. George work very hard to negotiate the best and fairest terms and stays in regular contact throughout an assignment to make sure everything is going well and you’re happy. George is always available to give support, advice and encouragement, and he is definitely one of the best recruitment agents I’ve ever signed up with.”

Senior Freelance Medical Writer, London

“George has recruited me to work on several freelance projects, which have all been very successful. He is meticulous in his approach, very supportive and ensures that everything goes as smoothly as possible. Working with him is always a pleasure.”

Science and Medical Writer, London

Her book 42 Rules for a Web Presence That Wins will be published in September, 2011.

“The rules may be less important than the examples! Some of the anecdotes are counter-intuitive and web ‘ambassadors’ will benefit simply by asking the questions implied by author Gamse’s rules.”

Vint Cerf, Internet Pioneer

“A tactical and practical guide to web activities that will help you avoid the pitfalls and potholes.”

Guy Kawasaki, Author, Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions and former Chief Evangelist of Apple

“While 42 Rules for a Web Presence That Wins is an easy, enjoyable read, it delivers content and sage advice that can profoundly affect the success of your web presence. Starting with the mantra that ‘every page should have a clear strategy,’ Philippa has put together dozens of gems to help you get more from your web presence and think more deeply about your business, your customers and how to approach them. A must-read in this age of social media.”

Dr. Mark S. Albion, Co-Founder, More Than Money Careers LLC, and former professor, Harvard Business School

“I’ve known Philippa for a decade and a half. We met on the speaking circuit and I was always impressed by her breadth of knowledge, her depth of insight and her pragmatic approach to getting the most for every marketing dollar spent.
But above all, Philippa delivers such wonderfully practical advice. This book is packed with scenarios, examples and good, old fashioned common sense. Philippa is not wowed by the next new shiny marketing bauble but is laser-focused on what works, what’s tried and true and what simply makes sense. Read this book from cover to cover, but then keep it on hand. Just having it on your desk will make you a better online marketer.”
