Zuleika Aponte earned a BS degree in Biology and her MS degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus. She also has written many articles on clinical epidemiology and statistical methods.

For the past ten years she has dedicated herself to regulatory and safety writing. She is an epidemiologist at Novartis Pharma, specializing in drug safety for the infectious diseases and oncology products. She provides regulatory and safety advice as well as review and preparation of regulatory submissions. Previously, she worked at Pfizer as an Epidemiology for Regulatory and Safety Division, responsible for all aspects of global regulatory submissions in US and Europe, for oncology products. She previously worked at the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) as an epidemiologist, responsible for conducting HIV studies, writing protocols, interpreting and communicating results.

George Buckland founded WORD Recruitment Ltd in June 2010 after ten years in the recruiting business, much of it focused on placing medical writer talent with various firms. WORD distinguishes itself with its very personalized service to both medical writers and placements

George has been a recruiter since 1999 and his focus has been in working with editorial talent – copywriters, editors, journalists, and of course medical writers. Like many writers his current career and passion was not the first thing he did. He flirted with law (studied it in fact), worked as assistant to a theatrical agent (office dogs body on a pittance of a wage but very glamorous), and a design agency office manager (keeping designers fed and watered mainly)..It’s now his privilege and pleasure to open up possibilities for the talent he represents – a surgeon considering a writing career, a post-doc researcher wanting to escape the lab bench, an experienced writer wanting the freedom of a freelance medical writing career…. Natasha Das has been a freelance medical writer since 1997 and has clients internationally, in India, Singapore, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and numerous European countries. She has authored journal articles, monographs, articles, and blogs in a wide variety of medical areas for consumption by the public, medical professionals, and business CEO’s.

She wrote ‘Plagiarism – Why is it such a big issue for medical writers?’ –in PubMed indexed journal Perspectives in Clinical Research (Das N, Panjabi M. Plagiarism: Why is it such a big issue for medical writers?. Perspect Clin Res 2011;2:67-71). She wrote ‘The Blackouts – Anterograde Amnesia’, a Cover Story for Science Reporter. She also write “How to Become a Medical Writer” (Indian edition), in addition to contributing to chapters of numerous books. Dr. Das also translates medical content from English to regional Indian languages for public health awareness campaigns on national television.

Additionally, Natasha is a public speaker and has spearheaded health awareness campaigns in different cities across India to raise awareness about tobacco use in schools and colleges and to educate women on how to conduct a regular breast self examination for early detection of breast cancer. These awareness campaigns were in English, Hindi, or Oriya and were conducted in institutes, government offices, ladies clubs, and other private gatherings. She speaks at professional writing and medical conferences as well.

In addition to freelancing since 1997, Dr. Das worked as a staff lead and content developer for print and online materials focused on cardiology and diabetes.

Dr. Das holds degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Shriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCB MCH).

She is the Founding Secretary of AIMWA, the All India Medical Writers Association.

Barbara Gastel, a physician specializing in biomedical writing and editing, is professor of integrative biosciences, humanities in medicine, and biotechnology at Texas A&M University, where she coordinates the master’s degree program in science and technology journalism.

Dr. Gastel’s accomplishments and career path:

  • Earned a BA from Yale and an MD and MPH from Johns Hopkins
  • American Association for the Advancement of Science mass media fellowship at Newsweek
  • Worked in communication and administration at the National Institutes of Health
  • Taught science writing at MIT
  • 1996 through 2007, directed the US aspect of a program, funded by the China Medical Board of New York, to teach English-language biomedical writing and editing in Asia
  • Assistant dean for teaching at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine
  • Since 2007, she has been Knowledge Community Editor for AuthorAID at INASP (www.authoraid.info), a project to help researchers in developing countries to write about and publish their work.

Dr. Gastel is the author of three books: Presenting Science to the Public (ISI Press, 1983), Teaching Science: A Guide for College and Professional School Instructors (Oryx Press, 1991), and Health Writer’s Handbook, now in its second edition (Blackwell Publishing, 2005). In addition, she coauthored, with Robert A. Day, the sixth and seventh editions of How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper (ABC-CLIO, 2006 and 2011). She also has written many articles and chapters on writing, editing, teaching, and medical topics. From 2000 to 2010, she edited Science Editor, the periodical of the Council of Science Editors.

Dr. Gastel has received awards from the American Medical Writers Association and the Council of Science Editors, and she is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2006, the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences named her an Honored Editor in the Life Sciences. She was the 2010 recipient of the John P. McGovern Science and Society Award, given by the scientific research society Sigma Xi, and the 2012 recipient of the Texas A&M University Distinguished Achievement Award for Extension, Outreach, Continuing Education, and Professional Development.

Johanna Lackner Marx is the Founder and President of InQuill Medical Communications, LLC which provides CME certification services, CME writing services, and medical marketing services to clients. InQuill also provides online medical writing training courses in eight different kinds of medical writing. InQuill is organizing and hosting the Medical Writing Festival.

Tom Lang has been a technical or medical writer-editor since 1975. He was Manager of Medical Editing Services at the Cleveland Clinic for many years and a Senior Scientific Writer in the New England Cochran and Evidence-Based Practice Centers at the New England Medical Center.

His books, How to Report Statistics in Medicine, second edition and How to Write, Publish, and Present in the Health Sciences, are popular texts in the field. An adjunct instructor at the University of Chicago’s Medical Writing and Editing certificate program since its inception, he has received teaching awards from the University of Chicago’s Graham School of General Studies, the American Statistical Association, and the American Medical Writers Association.

He has led hundreds of workshops on scientific publications throughout the world. Currently Treasurer of the World Association of Medical Editors, he also is a past President of the Council of Science Editors and a Fellow of AMWA.

Jonathan Marx received his undergraduate degree in psychology and MBA from Stanford University. He enjoyed a successful executive career for twenty-five years in major and start-up media companies:

  • Senior Vice President – Viacom, running its cable operations in California and Oregon
  • Vice President, Strategy – Pacific Bell Yellow Pages, bringing a 100 year old business into multi-media
  • Vice President – TiVo, designing and running the startup operations for the pioneering digital video recording (DVR) company
  • President – ISP Channel, one of the first four companies in the U.S. to provide high speed cable modem access for computers

Since 2001, Jonathan has dedicated his multi-media background to helping businesses and practices in the medival and health fields with their strategies, launches, and marketing. He has consulted with, launched, and managed several health and medical related companies, to the delight of clients.

Nancy Monson has been successfully freelancing as a consumer health and medical writer for over two decades and has recently completed her training to become a certified health coach. Her articles on health, nutrition and psychology topics have been published in over 30 major consumer magazines, including Family Circle, Glamour, More, Redbook, Shape, Viv, Weight Watchers Magazine and Woman’s Day, and on various websites. Cliff Mintz has an extensive background in biopharmaceutical drug development, biotechnology training and bioscience career development. Dr. Mintz has held a variety of positions including stints as a medical school professor, professional recruiter management consultant and medical/science writer.

Dr. Mintz is the founder of BioInsights, a biopharmaceutical education and training organization, a co-founder of BioCrowd, a social networking and career development website for bioprofessionals and author of BioJobBlog. He teaches product development and regulatory affairs in several biotechnology training programs and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Georgetown Medical School. Dr. Mintz has been an invited speaker at numerous symposia and bioscience meetings focused on social media, career development and education and training.

Eugene Pozniak is Managing Director of Siyemi Learning, an independent European CME provider and Programme Director of European CME Forum, a Not-For-Profit organisation bringing together all stakeholder groups with an interest in European CME. He founded Siyemi Learning, the European CME-CPD Academy, the European CME Forum which, in addition to running its annual meeting (5th annual meeting 14-16 November in London, UK) also supports the Good CME Practice Group and the recently launched open access, peer review Journal of European CME.

Eugene serves on the Board of the Global Alliance for Medical Education (GAME), and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of European CME (JECME). He gives advice on CME matters and develops CME accredited programmes. He has experience in CME for Europe, North America, Latin America, Japan and the Middle East.

Following his degree in Chemistry, Eugene spent 12 years working in a variety of positions in the pharmaceutical industry, advertising and medical communications agencies. He left the promotional sector in 2000, working since then exclusively in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and created the first CME accredited e-learning platform in Europe.
